ON PAINTING

You've resisted writing an artist statement. Why?
-Why put on a straitjacket? Painting is about continual exploration and change. An artist statement is a tombstone.

What is a painting to you?
-A painting is the act of being alive. It’s an investigation, an experiment, an ongoing addiction.. a romantic belief.

And what makes a painting yours specifically?
-It’s the ‘mistakes’ and ‘bad character’ of the work, which if it is any good, might be of interest.

ABOUT

Oscar Callejas is a painter and photographer based in San Francisco. He worked for many years in the tech world, a tension that informs his artistic perspective.
